Background: here you be
Personality: Stoic, cruel, curt, and maybe a little less than personable is the best way to initially describe Hubert. He often keeps to himself, and appears to care less about another’s feelings, in fact, it’s quite obvious he’s analyzing them upon first meeting them. One of his strengths is that he will full analyze a person and figure out based on their actions if they’re trustworthy. He is also likely the first person to find out if someone in the party is hiding a secret from everyone else (Pascal being Amarcian (though not really a secret) and Malik being from Fendel). His fighting style is rather unique, but he admits that he’s strong and that no one, including his own brother, can defeat him. One can easily tell that he’s a lieutenant in the Strahtan military given such a cold and stoic composure he constantly shows. Still, there’s much more to him than that outward personality.
Inwardly, he has a lot of hide, a lot that he’s forcefully stashed away thanks to being adopted off into a military family. It’s noted he’s hardly recognizable from his 10 year old self who constantly feared and even wet his pants at one point. And he’s also quite embarrassed about his past, and is known to blush whenever someone (like Asbel or Cheria) bring it up. At 10, he simply looked up to his foolish brother, following him around, believing that he was almighty and that no one was better than him. The fact that he was adventurous was an amazing trait Hubert thought he had. That was until that tragic day that nearly claimed all of their lives. His brother’s foolishness nearly got everyone killed. At least that’s how the 17 year old lieutenant views the event now.
Growing up, Hubert never smiled, and only trained to be a fighter, though he kept his interests in comic books and the like. Such fiction were his solace, as well as his fighting style. Though such a fighting style doesn’t go unnoticed by Malik or his brother. He’ll claim it’s a military secret, though he’s just too embarrassed to admit he still is obsessed with his comic books and fandoms at his age. There are times, though, he lets his fanboy slip, such as when someone else mispronounces things from fandoms he adores, or doesn’t recall the events of the canon correctly. He has no problem correcting them if they’re wrong.
Hubert is also incredibly easy to make fun of. While he’s stoic, and seems guarded, certain people are able to easily find openings in which to tease him with, causing him to blush, fluster, and likely deny any claims they have against him. One major thing being his very obvious crush on Pascal. He denies that he wants to be her hero, but he has shown his heroism in constantly protecting her from any harm that may come her way. Of all the people in the party, he is shown to be attracted to her the most, and sometimes shows this by calling her cruel names (ie. Insufferable woman) or finding weaknesses in her character or fighting style. It appears that he is unable to compliment her, and resorts to such cruelty at times, though luckily it appears she rarely (if ever) takes offense to it.
Though Hubert is often too serious about many things, he doesn’t waste time at finding his own faults and correcting them. While his near inability to trust people by overanalyzing him often makes him an outcast, and unsociable, it has also proven to be lifesaver for the group. Malik has praised him in the sense that a soldier is able to find his own faults, does not need to be scolded by another. Because of that event, he tries to become more personable, and does in his own way. Instead of overanalyzing people, he waits for people to prove that they are worthy of being trusted by him. It allows him to start trusting his brother more, wanting him to prove to Hubert that he is capable to taking over Lhant as the lord. So while he cannot condone Asbel’s often seemingly whimsical habits, he does understand that Asbel has what is necessary to protect their howetown.
Emotionally, he is what many would consider a 'tsundere'. Underneath it all, he is insanely caring and is always considering the best for everyone even if he doesn't act like it at all. It's a defense mechanism for him for being, as he sees it, thrown away as a child. He even considers himself an orphan in the game since he was adopted away by his real parents. It takes a lot of time for those old relationships to heal, and even then, they're not even close to what they were when he was a child. He cares a lot for Asbel by the time their journey ends, but it's hardly the foolhardy way he used to. Instead, he points out his brother's flaws in what he did. Perhaps it's because he doesn't want another instance of what occurred 7-8 years prior, and it's his way of worrying for his brother and his pride. He knows how much his brother's pride was hurt by the incident when they were children, unable to protect Sophie. He intends for that to never occur again. By the end of the game, it appears that their relationship is at the very least mended and they can speak like brothers.
Another important relationship to focus on is his relationship with Malik. It appears they have a professional relationship going on after Malik's past is revealed, but there is a hint of Malik playing the role of the father than Hubert never had. Malik is able to see through Hubert's stoic persona and constantly tries to bring out that little boy that Hubert purposefully locked away. Hubert does catch on to this and ends up opening himself to Malik more than anyone else in the party, knowing his secrets are safe with him. There also appears to be a great deal of mutual respect between the two, not only as soldiers, but as friends. And it is because of such respect that Hubert trusts Malik’s views, and greatly appreciates his words of wisdom. While he could go without the constant being made fun of, he does know it is in light hearted jest that Malik jokes around with him. Still, just jesting also brings out some things that Hubert would prefer to keep hidden, if only to save him from embarrassment.
When it comes to his more emotional side, as mentioned he prefers to hide it. Vulnerability is something he doesn't like to show, and that makes him a very curt individual. Though when it comes to matters about love, it sadly gets hilarious with him. He can't even admit to himself for a long while his feelings about Pascal until he's practically coerced by Malik and Richard to do so. In other words, he's very obvious about his affection for the girl. The more he cares for someone, the more he's likely to complain about them. Again, classical tsundere. Though by the end of the game, he comes to terms with his feelings for the Amarcian, and promises Asbel to make his feelings clear to her (since the first time he admitted them they were misunderstood).
Though it's also important to say that he is a growing boy with hormones. At 17 years old, well, he does have quite the perverted side to him. He tells Cheria at one point that her skirt is too short that and that it's distracting. Even though no one else ever comments on it. Another important thing to point out is that he completely understands suggestive subtext. When he mentions that "he's resigned to the fact that Pascal's messing around will bring us to some sort of painful finish." Malik immediately chimes in with "Hubert! You want Pascal's messing around to bring you to a painful finish?!" In which Hubert denies he said that instead of playing dumb.
"Maybe she's in to that sort of thing. Who am I to judge?"
"I did NOT say that!"
As mentioned, there is also the fanboy side to him. A side he prefers to keep locked away, but when no one is looking, he's known to be lost in his fanbases. This is shown when he finds a set of sunscreen ranger figures, and when everyone leaves, he starts pretending he's one of them. Also, he's the red ranger... Though when he's caught, he pretends it's nothing and that he was actually doing important work. This also goes for his fighting style, which was actually taken from a series he read as a child called 'Troll Calibur'. He'll say he 'replicated the style from printed material' and that it's now a 'military secret', but truthfully, he copied the style of the main character he loved so dearly as a kid.
One positive point about Hubert is that because he is so curt, he's rather honest. At least when it doesn't come to his feelings. When he says he's going to do something, he will do it. When he says he's not going to do something, he won't do it. There is no lukewarm answer with him. In fact, while he's insanely honest with others, he does have a hard time being honest with himself. Again when it comes to his own feelings.
Overall, Hubert appears to be a simple character on the outside, but is quite the emotional mess from within. He's locked away his vulnerabilities to protect himself, and has punished himself to a life of solitude if only to ensure history is not repeated. After all, locking his sensitive feelings away is a lot better than having them destroyed all over again. But once he feels like he's met someone trustworthy enough, he will open up to them and the little 10 year old boy he's locked away will come out and play.
Abilities: Hubert has a rather unique fighting style that's completely self-taught. He uses dual blades as a weapon, but they are also capable of transforming into a bow as well as dual wielding guns. On the battlefield he is rather agile as well as being rather powerful, however it's also quite the glass canon.
By using the power of Cryas, Hubert is able to use Artes. Capable of using multiple elements in battle, he uses them along with his weapons to cast short, but effective spells. Alongside of being a rather offensive fighter, he is also an adequate healer. Perhaps not someone who can serve as a main healer of the group, however, he's capable of helping quite a bit with his Healing Wind as well as curing status ailments with Antidote.
here is also a list of artes he is capable of using
Alignment: Elios: Hubert is someone who has difficulties when it comes to loving people, and therefore starts off with hatred thanks to him being, as he felt, abandoned by his family as a child. However, when he gets close to someone, he starts to open up and show affection, but that also comes with showing his vulnerabilities that he's afraid to show due to being emotionally scarred as a child.
